You’ve decided to get a Nespresso machine. Now the dilemma is which type of machine to choose: Vertuo vs. OriginalLine?

Nespresso OriginalLine brews traditional (small) espresso shots with more variety of pods. Meanwhile, VertuoLine brews larger coffee drinks with Nespresso’s patented “centrifusion” technology.

VertuoLine is my choice as the coffee tastes richer with larger drink options. However, Original pods are cheaper with more coffee options than Vertuo pods. The Original is a good choice if you only like espressos, while Vertuo is better if you want a variety of drink sizes.

Here’s a brief history of how these Nespresso machines came about, how they differ, and the most popular models by type.

History Behind the Two Types of Nespresso Machines

Nespresso belongs to the Switzerland-based Nestle group (you probably know them for KitKat bars). Nespresso’s story started when Nestle’s engineer, Erik Favre, noticed a coffee shop in Rome was producing espresso with a thick layer of crema.

Favre wanted to create a machine that combines the convenience of home brewing with Italian espresso bar quality. The first Nespresso machine was created in 1986, and the rest is history, sort of.

Nestle actually had a slow start until new management came in. The company licensed its designs to companies like Breville and DeLonghi, who manufacture the machine (Nespresso only makes pods). George Clooney also bumped the brand with clever ads that positioned Nespresso as a luxury. Then, the rest was history.

Nowadays, Nespresso machines are known worldwide, with 14 billion Nespresso capsules sold yearly. The company puts a lot of emphasis on sustainability and produces fully recyclable aluminum pods.

However, Nespresso struggled to break through in the US market, mostly because US coffee lovers like larger drinks. Its patents also expired on the original design. So the company launched VertuoLine in 2014 — a range of machines that brew big coffee drinks. That led to two distinct machines and pods that we see today.

Nespresso Original Overview

Overall, original Nespresso machines have more coffee pod options but smaller and fewer drink options than Vertuo.

Nespresso OriginalLine is Nespresso’s classic line of espresso machines. These Nespresso machines use OriginalLine espresso pods — hermetically sealed capsules of ground coffee.

OriginalLine machines were made for brewing espresso, and each espresso machine has two buttons: espresso and lungo. You insert the pod, press a corresponding button, and the machine makes your drink. These brew coffee like traditional espresso – pump hot water through the coffee pods to make the drink. They heat up in about 15 to 20 seconds, and you’ll have a drink ready in less than a minute.

There’s a wide range of pods available at a cheap cost, thanks to patent expirations.

Most machines don’t include a milk frothing option, but you can buy a milk frother separately or as a bundle. The high-end models – Creatista and Lattisima – have integrated milk frothers.

All OriginalLine capsules come in one size, which makes ristretto, espresso, or a lungo. If you want a stronger coffee coffee, you’d have to use two capsules. Otherwise, your drink will be too diluted with a larger size.

Nespresso Vertuo highlights:

• Only Nespresso manufactures pods; more expensive

These espresso machines were made to appeal to the North American market, where coffee lovers prefer Starbucks Venti-style coffees over small espresso.

VertuoLine machines use a unique Nespresso extraction system. You insert the pod, the machine reads the barcode printed on the edge of the pod, and automatically brews your drink by spinning it (more on that later). There’s even less work required on your part than when using an OriginalLine espresso machine, because there’s only one button!

VertuoLine Nespresso machines make five coffee drinks: espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, Americano, and Alto XL (Note: Alto Xl has been discontinued and reintroduced a few times). The sizes go from a single espresso shot at 1.8 oz to 12 oz coffee (there’s even an 18 oz carafe for the VertuoNext).

VertuoLine Nespresso capsules are made for a specific size each. Nespresso only manufactures Vertuo pods, so there’s less selection than Original coffee capsules.

None of the Nespresso VertuoLine devices have a milk frother, but you can buy a separate one or choose an espresso machine and a milk frother bundle.

Main Differences Between Nespresso VertuoLine vs. Original

I’ll go through the main differences between each type of machine below. You can also watch the walkthrough from our review:

OriginalLine machines use a pressure-based system. You insert the pod, a needle punctures the top, and the machine pumps water through the pod at 19 bars of pressure until espresso pours into your cup. This process resembles how a traditional espresso is made.

VertuoLine machines use a patented Nespresso system called centrifusion. You insert the pod, which has a barcode under the edge. The machine reads the printed barcode and automatically adjusts all the settings. The machine recognizes the volume, temperature, and correct water ratio for each pod to ensure a good brew. You’ll even notice some pods produce very hot coffee versus others.

The Vertuo machine pumps hot water into the capsule. Then, the capsule is spun 7,000 times per minute to infuse the coffee grounds in the capsule, and the brewed coffee flies out the capsule edges. This results in a thicker crema and body compared to the pressure-based system.

Overall, centrifusion allows you to have a larger drink and a thicker crema than OriginalLine, although some coffee drinkers won’t consider this authentic.

Coffee Flavor and Crema

The machine functions leads to different flavor and body between Original and Vertuo machines. My vote for the best espresso flavor goes to Vertuo devices. Nespresso Vertuo extracts more coffee flavor and crema than the OriginalLine machine.

I found Vertuo espresso was closer to a traditional espresso. It has a thicker body and richer taste. This is probably the magic of centrifusion, which brews longer and extracts more coffee. The longer brewing time almost resembles an immersion brew like French press, which also has rich taste.

Also, Vertuo pods have more ground coffee than Original pods, where Vertuo espresso pods have 7 grams of coffee compared to 5 for Original pods (and each brew the same amount of coffee).

On top of that, OriginalLine uses 19 bars or pressure to brew, which is too high for the coffee in Nespresso capsules and well above the typical 9 bars on traditional espresso machines. The coffee can’t extract at that pressure, which results in a weaker espresso. The espresso comes out in 20 seconds, compared to 30 seconds on my traditional espresso machine.

As for the crema, it’s the other way around — I marginally prefer OriginalLine crema to VertuoLine. It’s true that the VertuoLine crema is very thick and has more aroma, but the OriginalLine has a texture more similar to real espresso. It’s thinner and resembles a mousse-like cream on a traditional espresso. VertuoLine crema is so thick I can pick it up with a spoon and return it to the cup, and it’ll hold its shape.

While I prefer Nespresso VertuoLine espresso, there are a lot of coffee capsules to choose from for both machines, so you can find something you like.

Capsule Differences and Cost

Each machine has a distinctly different capsule, and I’ll explain why that matters for each.

VertuoLine Capsules

VertuoLine capsules are dome-shaped, come in three sizes, and can make five different drinks. More importantly, VertuoLine pods are only manufactured by Nespresso, which means a few things.

1. VertuoLine pods are more expensive, which means a higher ongoing cost.
2. There are fewer flavor options compared to the Original pods. Nespresso is the only brand to make these capsules because they need a barcode that the Vertuo machine recognizes.

The cost varies if you buy from Nespresso’s website or a re-seller, such as Amazon, but OrignalLine pods are more affordable compared to VertuoLine. Also, third-party compatible pods are usually cheaper than Nespresso brand capsules.

If you prefer smaller drinks, such as ristretto and espresso, you’ll love traditional-sized espresso drinks. Nespresso OriginalLine offers a variety of intensities, from mild to strong drinks.

If you like a long cup of black coffee, you’ll love Grand Lungo and cafe VertuoLine pods. These pods can brew huge steaming mugs of coffee.

However, both the OriginalLine and Vertuo let you change the drink size — add more water to the OriginalLine pod to make an Americano, or reprogram the Vertuo capsule to make the drink you want.

Nespresso VertuoLine vs Original Line: Which Is Better?

As if choosing a Nespresso machine wasn’t already hard enough, now they’ve added a whole new line, the VertuoLine. So what’s so special about these new models and should one find a place in your home?

This review will dive deep into the details of Nespresso Vertuo vs Original, so you’ll know which pod coffee maker is right for your kitchen.

Nespresso Original

This classic line offers ultra-convenient single-serve coffee makers that produce a ristretto, espresso, or lungo from a hermetically sealed capsule of ground coffee.

Nespresso partners with well-established manufacturers like Breville and DeLonghi to produce a variety of Original espresso machines, and it’s this variety that stands out in this duel. Regardless of your budget, space, or favorite espresso drink, there’s a Nespresso Original coffee machine for you.

Nespresso Vertuo

Nespresso first released the new VertuoLine in 2014. They designed it to appeal to the North American market, where larger coffees are often preferred over espresso.

VertuoLine’s claim to fame uses special barcoded coffee pods and a unique extraction system to produce five drink sizes, from a single espresso to a 14 oz coffee.

The Face-to-Face Showdown: Nespresso Vertuo vs Original Line

This section will put both lines against each other in a head-to-head battle of Nespresso Vertuo vs Original. Who will emerge victoriously? Keep reading to find out!

Types of Drinks

The biggest distinction between Nespresso Original vs Vertuo is the style of drinks they make.

If you only drink espresso or espresso-based drinks, choose an Original. Each machine offers three brew sizes: the 0.7-oz ristretto, the 1.4-oz espresso, and the 3.7-oz lungo.

On the other hand, if you want the option of drinking a larger coffee as well, you’ll be a fan of the Nespresso Vertuo machines. These brewers offer 5 cup sizes: an espresso, a 2.7-oz double espresso, a 5-oz gran lungo, an 8-oz mug of coffee, or a 14-oz alto XL.

Milk Frothing:

None of the Vertuo models come with built-in milk frothers, but you can bundle them with Nespresso’s popular Aeroccino frother at a discounted price.

On the other hand, two of the Original Nespresso models, the Creatista and the Lattissima, offer built-in milk frothers. However, these are significantly more expensive.

The smaller and more affordable Original Nespresso models are only for espresso, but you can also bundle them with an Aeroccino.

Winner: The Nespresso VertuoLine wins this round because each coffee machine can make both espresso and coffee. While the Originals offer built-in milk frothing, the availability of the Aeroccino renders that less important.

The Capsules

The OriginalLine has a far bigger selection of Nespresso capsules. Because the patent on these cup-shaped capsules has expired, they’re now available from a wide variety of third-party sellers. If you already have a favorite coffee, you might even find it in capsule form. It’s also easier to find variety packs of Original capsules, perfect for large households or offices.

Many reviewers believe the Original capsules come closer to an authentic espresso taste and mouthfeel.

The only downside to the Original Nespreso compatible capsules is that they come in a single size, so a bigger drink like a lungo will necessarily be more dilute.

The dome-shaped VertuoLine capsules are only available from Nespresso because they require a barcode to be recognized by the Vertuo machine. This means the variety of Nespresso Vertuo pods is limited, and you might have a harder time finding what you want.

However, the Nespresso VertuoLine capsules come in three different sizes, so larger drinks can be as powerful as smaller ones. Also, the Vertuo Nespresso capsules produce a thicker layer of crema, even on the larger coffees, for a richer coffee experience.

Winner: Original Line wins this round. Even though their capsules only come in one size, the huge variety of options gives them the edge.

Extraction Method

These two systems use very different extraction methods, though that might not be apparent from the outside.

Original models use a pressure-based system. The capsule’s top is punctured, and hot water is forced in at up to 19 bars of pressure until the bottom bursts, and a frothy espresso emerges. This resembles how traditional espresso is made.

The VertuoLine coffee makers use a spinning system they’ve termed “centrifusion.” Hot water pumps into the capsule, which is then spun at 7000 rpm to infuse the water before it reaches your cup thoroughly. The centrifugation system yields a thicker crema and is quieter during operation.

Vertuo Line Nespresso pods also use a unique barcode system. Each is printed with a barcode that dictates the ideal brewing conditions for that coffee. The espresso machine scans the barcode and automatically adjusts its settings for perfect brewing; no user input is required.

Winner: This was a close one, but the VertuoLine takes it. The barcode scanning system makes it foolproof to use, and we love the quiet hum of the centrifugal extraction.

Variety of Machines

The Nespresso Original Line has eight base models and 12 different products, covering a wide range of sizes and features, from the tiny Pixie to the bean-to-cup Lattissima. This is possible because Nespresso has partnered with other companies, like Breville, DeLonghi, and Kitchenaid, which bring decades of manufacturing expertise.

In comparison, the VertuoLine machines are made in house. There are only three models, the Vertuo, the VertuoPlus, and the Evoluo. And to be honest, they’re all rather similar in appearance and functionality. The VertuoLine is relatively new, so more options are likely forthcoming if the line proves successful.

Winner: There’s no contest here. The Originals win for having options covering a broad spectrum of sizes, styles, and features.

Price

All three Vertuo Line Nespresso machines have similar prices, while the Original models cover a wide range of budgets.

The least expensive Original models, like the Pixie, Essenza, and Citiz, are cheaper than the Vertuo machines. In contrast, the most expensive, like the Creatista and Lattissma, are at a higher price point.

If you’re on a strict budget, a low-end Original Line model bundled with an Aeroccino is the way to go. But if you like to drink coffee AND espresso, a Vertuo espresso machine will save you needing to buy separate modes to make both.

Another factor is the price of espresso pods. You can find alternative pods for the Original Nespresso machines from competing brands for far less money than the Nespresso brand Vertuo coffee capsules.

Winner: We’ll give the edge to the Original here. It offers the least expensive models for those on a budget, and the coffee pods are much cheaper.

The Verdict

If this Nespresso VertuoLine vs Original showdown has taught us anything, it’s that both coffee maker lines excel in certain aspects. So with that in mind, here are our recommendations.

Buy a Nespresso Original machine if…

You only drink espresso or espresso-based drinks and don’t make coffee. You’ll pay less for the espresso machine and the Nespresso capsules, and you’ll have way more coffee pod choices. You’re also getting a more authentic espresso experience from the pressure-based extraction.

Buy a Nespresso Vertuo machine if…

You want the convenience of making espresso and coffee from the same machine. With the barcoded capsule brewing system, the VertuoLine makes brewing any style and size of drink foolproof. If you love a rich and thick crema layer on your coffee, you’ll be impressed by the centrifugal extraction.

What is the difference between Nespresso and Keurig?

The difference between Nespresso and Keurig is that Nespresso machines make espresso, while Keurig coffee makers make drip coffee. The two brewers also use different types of coffee capsules. Additionally, Nespresso uses recyclable aluminum capsules, whereas Keurig’s plastic K-Cups have a negative environmental impact.

Nespresso vertuo или original что лучше

В наше непростое время все чаще приходится оставаться дома. Нарушен привычный ритм жизни, закрыты любимые кофейни и кондитерские, но все же хочется выпить чашку ароматного кофе, и мы начинаем задумываться о покупке кофемашины. Но что выбрать?

Мы не будем разбираться во всем многообразии предложений, остановимся лишь на машинах системы Неспрессо, тем более что всего лишь пару лет назад эта компания представила рынку свои новейшие разработки, выпустив оригинальную кофемашину Nespresso Vertuo. Казалось бы, новое, прогрессивное решение, выбор очевиден. Но не все так однозначно. Давайте рассмотрим Nespresso Vertuo и Nespresso Original с точки зрения обычного пользователя.

эти две системы принципиально разные, несмотря на одного производителя Неспрессо. Маленькие капсулы только для ориджинал, большие только для Vertuo. Так что решение нужно принимать сразу — переиграть не получится.

СПОСОБ ПРИГОТОВЛЕНИЯ:

Система Nespresso Original позволяет готовить очень приличный классический кофе эспрессо, лунго, капучино, в особенности, если вы покупаете оригинальные капсулы Неспрессо или их аналоги у проверенных поставщиков. Бленды разные, вкусы тоже, но все-таки в итоге вы получаете 20-40 мл хорошего насыщенного кофе с crema (кофейной пенкой), сваренного по классической системе приготовления эспрессо, когда горячая вода под давлением проходит сквозь плотную массу молотого кофе (качество помола и качество утрамбовки-проф. «темперовка» тоже имеют значение).

Часть блендов Неспрессо и других производителей ориентированы на больший объем напитка — до 115 мл — и имеют в своем названии, как правило, слово LUNGO. Но это все тот же принцип приготовления кофе и все та же классическая кофейная чашка.

Другое дело если вы любите побольше, как в американских сериалах: уютная большая кружка, этак на 300-400 мл. без всяких горьких ноток. Этакий кофейный напиток. Тогда однозначно система Vertuo – ваш выбор.

Кофемашина системы Vertuo позволяет выдавать напиток объемом до 414 мл. Но принцип приготовления кофе совершенно иной, это уже не классика, не эспрессо, не нужна утрамбовка («темперовка» кофе), поэтому капсулы вертуо похожи на маленькие погремушки, нет давления, кофе заваривается по новой инновационной технологии Centrefusion. И хотя из-за «взбивания» в центрифуге кофе имеет пенку, это совершенно иной кофейный напиток.

ГАБАРИТЫ: 9 из 10 наших покупателей ценят кофемашины системы Неспрессо ORIGINAL за их компактность. Даже модели с капучинатором занимают немного места. А самые популярные компактные модели Неспрессо Essenza mini имеют габариты всего лишь 11х20.5х32.5см. Такая машина «приживется» на любой кухне.

Новая система гораздо объемнее. Большое количество дополнительных «наворотов» Вертуо не позволяют уместить систему в компактном корпусе. По габаритам новые машины ближе к рожковым, им нужно специальное место на кухне, да и капсулы значительно больше классических. Так что для тех, кто вынужден заказывать капсулы через службы доставки и для кого объем имеет значение, этот момент не последний при принятии решения.

НАДЕЖНОСТЬ: Компания Неспрессо на все свои машины дает единую гарантию – 2 года. Ремонт капсульной кофейной машины, как правило, бесполезное дело. В 9 случаях из 10 проще купить новую. Как показывает опыт кофемашин Неспрессо Оригинал, самые простые «механические» модели надежнее, служат дольше. Их предпочитают покупать в офисы, там, где нет «деликатного» домашнего подхода. Среди наших клиентов есть машины, которым уже по 5-7 лет, и они по-прежнему исправно варят отличный кофе.

Продажи Vertuo начались недавно, так что статистики пока нет, но учитывая количество электроники и дополнительных «наворотов» под корпусом, остается только пожелать, чтобы машина послужила определенный ей срок без поломок и проблем. Один неоспоримы плюс новой системы в отличие от классики Неспрессо – это бесшумность. Машина действительно работает очень тихо!

ЦЕНА: Для тех, кто привык экономить, выбор очевиден. На машины системы Original существует огромный выбор капсул-аналогов, стоимость которых значительно ниже капсул из бутика Неспрессо. Прекрасный вкус и качество кофе предлагают французский производитель L`OR или хорошо известный на российском рынке бренд LAVAZZA по цене значительно ниже оригинальных Неспрессо. Российские производители, серьезно занимающиеся кофе, предлагают цены в районе 15-22 руб. за чашку.

Есть конечно варианты и за 12-14 руб., но качество кофе у подобных поставщиков оставляет желать лучшего. Но это все о классических капсулах Неспрессо. Vertuo совсем другая история. Закрепив все свои инновационные технологии патентами, Неспрессо на несколько лет закрыл дорогу другим производителям. Только оригиналы, и только от Неспрессо.

Более того каждая капсула промаркирована специальным штрихкодом, отвечающим не только за рецептуру напитка, но и за происхождение этой самой капсулы. Так что найти «подешевле» — не получится. Минимальная стоимость чашки кофе системы Vertuo – 34 руб. Правда, заметим, что китайцы уже научились штамповать многоразовые капсулы не только для оригинально системы, но и для Vertuo. Но эти «разработки» мы опустим.
