USB vs HDMI Methods Compared

The USB with Imaging Edge Webcam method is a cheaper and simpler set up.

However, you will have better quality by using a capture card with the right HDMI cable.

USB with Imaging Edge Webcam

• No capture card required.

• This method will provide better quality than a standard webcam, but not as good as the capture card method.

• Lower quality than HDMI – the maximum resolution when using Imaging Edge Webcam is 1024 x 576 pixels.

• You cannot use audio from the camera or any external mics that are attached to the camera.

• You may have some issues with frame rate and choppy footage.

HDMI with Capture Card

• Better quality – you can get both Full HD and 4K footage from this method.

• You are able to use audio from the camera or any external mic attached to it.

• You should get very smooth footage without issues in frame rate (as long as you get a decent capture card).

• More costly as you will need a capture card.

Which Method Is Right for You?

If you just want better quality video calls with an easy to use set up, then go for the USB with Imaging Edge Webcam setup.

This is also the best method if you want to keep costs very low.

If you want Full HD (or better quality) streams or video calls then go for the HDMI cable with capture card method.

What USB Cable Do I Need to Use My Sony A7 III as a Webcam?

The Sony A7 III has ports for both Micro USB and USB Type-C.

To use your Sony A7 III as a USB webcam you will need to use one of these ports.

You should have been supplied with a Micro USB cable when you bought the Sony A7 III.

If you have lost the USB cable the camera was supplied with, then you should be able to use any replacement Micro USB or USB-C cable that has data transfer capabilities.

Just make sure that you get one that can also fit into your computer/laptop.

1. Go to the support website for the Imaging Edge Webcam software.

1. Scroll down to the section where it asks you to choose your camera model. You will want to choose the ILCE-7M3 which is the product code for the Sony Alpha 7 III.

1. Scroll further down and click on ‘Download Windows’ or ‘Download Mac’ depending on what type of device you have.

1. Choose a suitable location to save the application on your device. The file should look something like ‘IEW111_2108a.exe’ if you are on Windows. The file will probably end in ‘.dmg’ if you are on Mac.

1. Once it is downloaded, open up the downloaded file and it should start going through the installation and setup wizard.

How to use your Alpha or DSC camera to live stream using the USB port with Imaging Edge Webcam software

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.

If your Sony camera has the USB Streaming feature, it is the easiest method to live stream as you can receive video and audio through the camera. Another option to consider is Imaging Edge Webcam software. Check your operation manuals for detailed information and live streaming compatibility.

Steps to install and use the software

on your computer (restart the computer after installation).

1. MENU → (Network) → Smartphone Connect → Smartphone Connection → Off

• The camera will not connect if the Imaging Edge Desktop (Remote) software is active. Exit the software and then connect the camera.
• .If your camera has a USB Power Supply option, set it to ON. Use your camera's USB power or USB Power Delivery feature to allow streaming for extended periods.
  • A sufficiently charged battery has to be in the camera and doesn't charge while using USB power.
  • Refer to the Supplying power from a wall outlet section of your camera Help Guide for additional information.
  • For the ILCE-7M2, ILCE-7S, ILCE-7SM2, ILCE-7RM2, ILCE-5100, ILCE-6300, ILCA-68, ILCA-77M2, DSC-RX1RM2, DSC-RX10M2, DSC-RX10M3, DSC-RX100M4, or DSC-RX100M5:
    • Set the camera mode to (Auto Mode). After the live streaming/web conferencing service and video start, change to movie mode.
    • Set the camera to movie mode.
    • If you use the camera with the Cinematic Vlog setting or the XAVC S-I DCI 4K setting, you can't use Imaging Edge Webcam in these modes. Use a setting other than Cinematic Vlog or XAVC S-I DCI 4K.
    • You may need to install additional software or register an account.
    • The settings will differ depending on the service you are using. Check the user's manual or help page of the service.
    • The software doesn't process audio signals. Use the computer's built-in microphone or an external microphone.
    • The aspect ratio is automatically set to 16:9 when using the Imaging Edge Webcam software and will remain in that setting after use. You'll need to set it to a previous value if necessary.
    • The resolution of Imaging Edge Webcam software is 1,024 x 576 pixels.
    • If your camera doesn't support Imaging Edge Webcam software, you may be able to use your camera to live stream using the HDMI® port.

    Troubleshooting tips

    If the Sony Camera (Imaging Edge) selection doesn't appear in the camera settings of the web conferencing system or the live view screen isn't displayed even after the camera setting is switched, the web conferencing system may not be compatible. If the web conferencing system is available in both an app and a browser, try both.

    Other tips will vary depending on the operating system. Select your OS for more information.

    • If the movement isn't smooth during live streaming, switch to (Auto Mode) instead of movie mode.
    • When using the camera for an extended period, the camera will automatically shut down when the temperature rises beyond a certain point. For periods of extended use:
      • Use the (Auto Mode).
      • If your camera has the Auto Power OFF Temp setting, select the High setting to extend the time you can use the camera continuously. Manuals are posted on your model support page.
      1. Turn off the video of the web conferencing system.
      2. On the computer, select → Imaging Edge Webcam → USB Reset.
      3. Turn off the camera, and then turn it on again.
      4. Restart the video of the web conferencing system.
      • When using the Imaging Edge Webcam, don't connect or remove any USB devices from the computer or change the camera settings when using the software. If the live view screen is interrupted by such operations, turn off the camera and restart your Mac.
      • The message Failed to connect to the camera due to a conflict with the function of another running application, and you may be unable to connect.

        Настройка камеры

        1. Подключите камеру и компьютер с помощью USB-кабеля из комплекта поставки.

        Полезные советы по использованию ПО Imaging Edge Webcam

        • Формат экрана автоматически устанавливается на 16:9. По завершении использования ПО Imaging Edge Webcam выбор формата 16:9 сохраняется, поэтому при необходимости его следует переключить вручную.
        • При использовании Imaging Edge Webcam рекомендуется отключить спящий режим компьютера.
        • При использовании Imaging Edge Webcam не отсоединяйте USB-кабель от USB-устройств, таких как камера или гарнитура, а также старайтесь не нажимать кнопку спуска затвора и изменять настройки камеры, например режим работы затвора.
        • Если в камере есть параметр USB питание, рекомендуется выбрать для него значение Вкл.

          • Используйте (автоматический режим).
          • Если в камере есть параметр Темп. авт.выкл.пит., выберите значение Высокий, чтобы увеличить продолжительность непрерывной работы камеры.
          1. Отключите видео системы видеоконференцсвязи.
          2. На компьютере выберите → Imaging Edge Webcam → Сброс USB.
          3. Выключите камеру и затем включите ее снова.
          4. Перезапустите систему видеоконференцсвязи.
          • При использовании Imaging Edge Webcam не подключайте и не отключайте USB-накопители от компьютера и не изменяйте параметры камеры при использовании программы. Если эти действия прервали работу экрана просмотра в реальном времени, отключите камеру и перезагрузите Mac.
          • Не удается подключиться, отображается сообщение Failed to connect to the camera due to a conflict with the function of another running application (Не удалось подключиться к камере из-за конфликта с работой другого активного приложения).
